Training Formats that Support Nonprofits Needs

The Philantrepreneur Foundation’s services are grounded in providing training. During COVID, we needed to adapt to an all-virtual training model. It met the needs at that time, and I loved the pivot.

The pandemic forced technology to become immersed in everyday life – fast. With that, the results were increased ease of use and acceptance. Participants were on a high learning curve, but they adapted. The terminology normally used in academia ended up being adopted for our use. However, multiple meanings emerged depending on the sector or industry. So, for your understanding, here are definitions of different types of virtual training formats and how we use them.

  1. On-Demand: A pre-recorded virtual training accessible anytime, also known as ‘Evergreen’.
  2. Live Virtual: Training with a presenter in real-time.
  3. Virtual Interactive: Training with a presenter in real time and interacting with the participants such as taking questions during the session or a live Q & A session immediately after the content presentation.

Each of these training modalities has its benefits, however, as an educator, I realize that not everyone thinks virtual is for them. However, when done correctly, with multiple learning styles included such as visual, auditory, linguistic, and kinesthetic, and with live interaction, it is a valuable and effective tool, that is affordable and accessible.  Participants have the same experience as in-class training.

Other terms you might hear are hybrid and blended learning formats.

  • Hybrid is defined as a lesson taught in the classroom by the instructor and simultaneously broadcast virtually. This rose in popularity as schools began to slowly reopen, and teachers returned to classrooms, yet some students remained at home.
  • Blended learning incorporates the use of technology to supplement the participant’s learning process and is used in both Hybrid and live classroom learning. An example is a computerized program with lessons for students to independently complete at stations. Blended learning has been used for many years.
